Picnic in the Park
The Picnic in the Park is a community event for the residents of the Parish of Alvechurch. It provides a day and evening of entertainment, fun and activities for all the family to enjoy. Whilst any profits we raise go to local charities, we do not organise the event as a fundraiser but as a vehicle for other charities to raise money and for business and organisations to raise their profile. It is all about local people, local businesses, local groups and local charities.
We have prepared a Grant Application for the Calor Community Fund – money grants are available for local community funds but WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are NOT asking for money (although you can pledge) – we are after your Likes and Shares. PLEASE click here to help us.
What we need the money for
Due to the river running through the Meadows, the only access is via two bridges: a small, pedestrian bridge and a single track vehicular bridge. This is the only way for vehicles such as mowing equipment and stallholders cars and vans to get on to the field.
The structure under the bridge has been deteriorating for some time and, due to heavy rainfall last winter it now needs substantial repairs to make it safe.
The Picnic and the Meadows are inextricably linked. It should be noted that the Meadows is not actually the easiest place to hold a large event – access is limited by a narrow lane down to a very small car park. Stall holders must drop off their equipment and then move their cars; visitors have to find parking around the village on the day. However, it is all worth it: the Meadows lie at the heart of our community and provide a beautiful backdrop to a wonderful community event.
We work very hard to put on a safe, enjoyable event that villagers of all ages look forward to. Local organisations such as The Lounge Youth Club and Alvechurch and Hopwood Cricket Club rely on the money generated by the event to run year-round so the event has a much bigger impact on our community than just one fun day a year. It would be such a shame to lose all this because of a bridge.
